Tell Us About Yourself

If you are considering a remodeling project, Houzz.com is the website you should be using today.

This innovative site is similar to Pinterest, as it allows people to share ideas and gain inspiration for projects. Unlike Pinterest, however, Houzz is dedicated entirely to home remodeling and renovations.

It allows you to browse ideas for specific rooms, or seek inspiration on a style category that suits your preferences. You can get general information on products, leisurely browse for furniture, or find the perfect faucet to match your blue-toned eclectic-themed kitchen.

So how can you get the most from Houzz? With the right knowledge and the right approach, your remodeling will be easier than ever!

How Homeowners Can Use Houzz for Fantastic Remodeling

The First Step: Create Your Account

Before you can do anything with Houzz, you need to create a personal account. You can do this by signing in with one of two options. The first option is to sign up with your email address and the second is to use your Facebook account. Many people like to use their Facebook account because they will eventually share ideas and remodeling information with their Facebook friends, so it just makes sense to connect your Houzz and Facebook profiles from the very beginning.

When you sign up, you’ll have the chance to enter general information related to your needs. You’ll be asked questions related to your future projects, including outdoor and indoor remodeling and your preferred styles.

Some of the styles that you can choose during setup include

– Victorian
– Tropical
– Farmhouse
– Modern
– Southwestern
– Rustic
– Eclectic

Selecting your preferred styles helps Houzz give you immediate suggestions for remodeling features.

Photos

If you’re just starting out on Houzz, you may want to start with the different categories listed under “Photos” in the top banner. In this section, you can simply click on areas like kitchen, bathroom, home office, home gym, or basement. This will give you a great launching point to search a wide variety of ideas.

If you are planning a kitchen remodel, for example, you can start by looking at ideas that cover a wide range of design themes and styles. You may be looking for something modern, but you never know, those rustic kitchen features just might tug at your heart strings. If you want to find something more specific, you can start with the search area…

Search Field

Once your profile is created, you can use the search area at the top to type in exactly what you are looking for. Perhaps you want ideas for a Southwestern living room; in that case, type in “Southwestern living room” and Houzz will deliver a series of images that meet your keywords. You can now scroll through the ideas and take a look at common themes and materials. If you see one that you like, you can now save it to your “Ideabooks.”

Using the Ideabooks

The Ideabooks feature is essentially your own personal photo album, similar to a board on Pinterest. You can use this feature to enter images and ideas that you like and sort through them later. One of the most useful tools in the Ideabooks feature is the chance to enter comments about why you like that image or design. Maybe you like the living room table, the backsplash, or the ceiling fan. Simply add a little note for future reference and you’ll be all set.

When you click on an image, you’ll likely see small green tags throughout the picture. These tags provide information related to the material or product. For example, the countertop may have a tag over it, when you hover your mouse over the tag, you get information related to that countertop. This information can include the name or material of the product and it sometimes includes pricing.

For many Houzz users, the Ideabooks feature is the heart of the website. It allows you to organize your thoughts and helps you visually communicate your preferences to a contractor or your spouse.

“Show Rooms Colors” Feature

One of the most unique aspects of Houzz is the “Show Rooms Color” feature. If you are interested in the paint colors, either on the walls, ceiling, cabinets, or anywhere else, this feature allows you to get information on paint products. Although this isn’t available for all images, this is a sponsored feature that gives product names and codes. You can share the information or even save color schemes that you like.

The color feature is a  great chance to highlight your favorite paints and design schemes in your Ideabooks.

Searching for Products and Materials

When you are ready to find furniture and accessories to add to your home remodeling project, you can use Houzz to search for a wide variety of products. Simply take your mouse to the “Shop Departments” area at the top of Houzz and you’ll see a long list of product categories, including Kitchen, Lighting, Outdoor, and Bath. You’ll then have access to subsections for each area.

For example, you can go to “Kitchen,” then “Sinks and Faucets” to look at a wide variety of fixtures. You can then filter items by finish, style, and price range. No matter what you need for your home, you’ll be able to find the perfect products, furniture, and accessories to match your style and budget.

Collaborate Your Dream

The ability to collaborate is perhaps the greatest strength of Houzz. You can communicate and share ideas with friends, your spouse, family members, and your contractor. All you really have to do is enter the email of someone you want to share your ideas with and they will be able to see what is inspiring you. Giving contractors a visual example of styles and designs that you love is a great way to enhance your project.
