Tile, whether it’s natural stone, porcelain tile, or ceramic tile, is one of the best ways to add style and design to your home.

Installing tile adds a level of sophistication to your home that few materials can provide, but you still need to make smart decisions with your design. With these tips and tricks, you can have tile that looks stylish no matter what the current trend…

Tip: Three Different Tiles, Max!
Home design trends come and go, but if you remember to Rule of Three, you’ll have the foundation for a style that looks great for decades. Whether you are going for Southwestern flair and vibrant colors, or a relaxing look with neutral tones, we recommend using a maximum of three different tiles.

Make sure that the tiles complement each other in color and size. You want coordinating tones and obviously different sizes, so that the pattern you create is easy to see and pleasing to the eye. This way you can achieve the vibrant, active design you love without over-saturating or complicating the theme or color palette in the room.

Trick: Two Neutral, One Attention-Grabber
This is a great trick that adds excellent style to your tile. When choosing three tiles (and no more!), pick one that is an attention-grabber and two that are neutral or faded. For example, you might choose a layer of vibrant blue at the base of a kitchen backsplash, with light grey to fill in the wall and light cream-colored tiles on the floor.

In the bathroom, you could choose an accent tile to run along the center of the wall, and compliment it with a neutral. The combinations are endless, the key is remembering one attention-grabbing tile is enough.

Tip: Large Tiles for Easier Cleaning
In general, grout is harder to clean than tile; the smaller your tile, the more grout you’ll have to clean. It stands to reason, therefore, that the larger your tiles, the easier they will be to clean. If you’re worried about cleaning, choose large tiles and keep smaller tiles and mosaics to limited areas.

Trick: Create a “Feature Wall”
Imagine this bathroom: the walls and floor have stone tile that gives the area a warm, natural appearance. As you walk towards the shower at the far end of the room, you see reflective gray tile that makes the shower stand out from the rest of the atmosphere. This is an example of a “feature wall.”

Creating one feature wall that stands out as unique and different from the other areas is a great way to add character and liveliness, as well as a touch of creativity, to a bathroom or kitchen.

Tip: Avoid Busy Designs and Black Walls in Smaller Areas
Busy styles, like Southwestern designs that use multiple colors, shapes, and materials, are excellent for open, spacious areas. Unfortunately for small kitchens and bathrooms, they can be very crowding. If your rooms are already cramped, it’s best to avoid a busy tile design and keep it simple. (Remember the Rule of Three!)

The same goes for black tile. Lighter colors will make a room seem larger, but dark colors, especially black or deep red, will make a room look even smaller, so avoid it unless you have a large, open kitchen.
